Hira sews a little kite from scraps of Grandma's old clothes: a pink patch, a green patch and a yellow patch with tiny flowers. She paints on a smiling face and names him Patches. But on the morning of the big kite festival, while red kites, blue kites, fish kites and bird kites dance over the rooftops, Patches stays very still in Hira's arms. "What if the wind drops me? What if I fall, and everyone laughs?" Hira promises to hold his string the whole time. On his first try, Patches wobbles, wiggles and flops right into the long grass. Then a big old red kite called Captain Zoom floats down with a funny story about his own first day, and Patches is ready to try once more... Patches, the Little Kite Who Was Afraid of the Wind is a warm, gently funny picture book about fear, trust and the courage to try again. Inside this book, you will find: A lovable patchwork kite who feels nervous, just like little ones do. A kind girl who keeps her promise. Captain Zoom, a funny old kite who shows that everyone falls at first. A colorful kite festival over rooftops, fields and a winding river. Short, simple sentences for reading aloud. A cozy bedtime ending. A lovely read-aloud for children ages 3–7, and a perfect gift for any child who is learning to be brave, try new things and get back up after a fall.
