Emmeline was a little girl who lived with her mother and her Aunt Martha. They always liked to help the poor Ticknors family by giving them eggs for their children. Both her mother and aunt wanted Emmeline to perform this good deed by taking the eggs to them. However, although she always gave her consent, she would turn pale at the thought of doing the task. The main reason behind her fear was the Ticknors’ dog, Spotty, of whom poor Emmeline was terribly afraid. Yet, because she was obedient and did not want to disappoint her mother and aunt, she never shared her fear with them. One day, however, Emmeline managed to overcome her fear. She locked Spotty inside a corn house so he could not chase or bark at her. But would Emmeline feel happy about her act, or would her conscience torment her? Would her fear turn into friendship and pity for the dog? Was Spotty ever her real enemy, or was it only her imagination? Read this interesting story to find out how Emmeline and Spotty became friends.
