Shikwa (Nazm)

The garden of a manor house, known for its beauty and orderliness, was admired by everyone in the area; be it school children or local residents. Just outside the garden, near the palings by the roadside, stood a thistle bush. No one paid attention to this ordinary-looking bush, except for an old ass that longed to eat it, though its halter prevented it from reaching the plant. One day, a party was held at the manor, and among the guests was a charming young lady from Scotland. As she strolled through the garden, her eyes wandered beyond the palings and caught sight of the thistle bush. She smiled and asked the son of the house to bring her one of its flowers. When he brought it, she placed the thistle flower in his buttonhole. Why did the lady choose the thistle flower out of all the beautiful blossoms in the garden?
