Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864)

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist and short-story writer whose fiction drew deeply on Puritan New England. In The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables, he explored guilt, sin, secrecy, conscience, and moral responsibility. His symbolic and psychologically rich prose became central to nineteenth-century American literature.
