Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet, critic, and short-story writer who transformed Gothic and psychological fiction. Works such as “The Raven,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” display his mastery of atmosphere, suspense, and form. His tales of ratiocination also helped establish the modern detective story.
